Periodontal
Disease is the name given to Gum Disease. This inflammatory Disease
attacks the gums, bones and other supporting structures of the teeth.
The most common cause of tooth loss in adults is Periodontal Disease.
At Life Smiles Dental Surgery we pride ourselves on our ability
to treat and prevent gum conditions.
Periodontal Disease is the result of plaque (colourless bacteria
that forms on teeth). The plaque within our mouths mixes with sugars
and starches in our diet, resulting in the formulation of acids.
These acids irritate gums, causing them to become red, sore and
swollen. If the plaque is not brushed away, calculus (tartar) is
formed. As calculus increases, the gums begin to slip downward away
from teeth. This movement creates pockets between the gums and teeth.
Eventually these pockets fill with plaque, as a result over time
the bone structure deteriorates, resulting in tooth loss.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease;
- Bleeding gums whilst brushing or flossing your teeth
- Pain while chewing
- Red, sore, swollen gums
- Build up of calculus (tartar)
- Bad breath or bad taste
- Loss of teeth
- Teeth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Changes in bite
- Gums that have withdrawn from teeth and in between teeth
The diagnosis of Periodontal Disease can be made through an oral
examination with us. Within this consultation x-rays would be taken
and the depth of the pockets measured. At Life Smiles Dental Surgery
the Prevention of Periodontal Disease is a priority. At routine
check-ups patients will receive guidance steps in preventing Periodontal
Disease.
